Boundaries of Smoke

Building walls, labeling ourselves and others, imposing limitations... We excel at these tasks. Yet, when we delve deeper into our minds, searching for the origins of the mental barriers that loom before us, we realize they shrink, sag, and eventually dissolve into nothingness.

Sometimes, it takes just one glance; at other times, it demands great courage to hack away at these boundaries. Experience on this square how mental walls take form through light and smoke. Witness how we can traverse, touch, and even shatter the confines of our minds.

"Boundaries of Smoke" is a interplay of two worlds reflecting and seamlessly merging into one another. I play with the mental barriers that confront me daily. With a blend of light and smoke, I fumble in the dark, probing the boundary between reality and experience. Can we trust our perception, or are those lines truly drawn within our minds?

This project is a joint initiative of KU Leuven and LUCA School of Arts in Ghent.

'I am proud to present "Boundaries of Smoke," my conceptual art installation that was on display at the Ghent Light Festival 2024!It is a personal work: in my life I often stood in front of these walls and felt held back.

I attended vocational school and I was often told not to expect big things. I went against that and changed schools and even went on an internship to Norway. Afterwards, I continued my studies. I am now in my third year of interior design at Luca School of arts Brussels. That's something that was always said was going to be impossible. For me, that symbolizes breaking through a mental wall.

For an open-call, I showed a small-scale installation where I tried to make walls out of smoke and light. A few weeks later I was told that I could present my work in Ghent for the Light Festival. In the meantime, a lot has happened: after a lot of experimentation and thanks to the advice and support of many people, it has become a large, full-scale work. The walls are about 30 meters long and shine in different directions over the Edward Anseele square.

I am 23 years old and I was at the Festival of Lights! I am very proud of "Boundaries of Smoke." I hope that with the message that comes with this installation I can inspire all visitors but especially young people and encourage them to go for their dreams no matter what is said. you can do it if your motivation is strong enough!
